  Good Day!

Today I have the amazing Michael Lorde on my blog as my guest author. Michael is a new writer and his book, Blind Veil is a splendid example of his writing skills. I hope you enjoy reading about this dedicated author, I was impressed and hope you will be too. I hand you over to Michael Lorde...

My debut novel Blind Veil came to me instantly.  The plot, the characters, the whole storyline planted itself in my head in a quick second and insisted that it be penned down and published.  I have always written, since I could hold a pencil.  I’ve written books that I never published, plays that I never produced and screen plays that I’ve never shown anyone, but this insistence, from this story, to be published had been a first… and it spoke loudly.

I sat down and wrote the chapter outline and synopsis about a week or two later and then parked myself in front of the computer.  My fingers took over.  I was working two jobs at the time, so I wasn’t afforded the opportunity to write as often as I liked, but when I did write, it was just flowing.  My fingers couldn’t keep up with the storyline and I felt like I was just a typist for someone else.  Really, it was that cool.  It was a great feeling.

I was ecstatic with the end product when I hit that last keystroke.  I was done.  I was brilliant.  I was going to be author of the year for this incredible bestselling book.  I tucked it  away for a couple of weeks to give my brain a much needed break from it and so it would be a fresh read when I came back to it again.  I was really proud of my brilliant work.  It was stupendous, stellar, and unbelievably great.  I was the bomb!

Two weeks later I slid the book of holy grails from the shelf to take a peek, setting my baby down carefully, so as not to curl its perfect and delicate pages.  I sat down and began to read it.  Suddenly, all previous affirmations about my impressive writing skills disintegrated.  The pride I thought I’d feel, faded quickly into a murky bog of ‘Holy S**t this is a serious piece of crap that I’ve written.  How did I think anyone would want to read this the way it is?’

Half of what I thought I’d described perfectly when I wrote it would have taken hieroglyph specialists to decipher, and the edits… ‘…mother  f***ing crap… it was like a preschooler wrote on the wall with a crayon… and with the wrong color.  What was I thinking?’

Thankfully, my stubbornness prevailed and I managed not to get sick while cleaning it up.  I have to tell you though, that was a traumatic experience… at least the first time.  I have other books in the works now and one is currently going through edits.

I realize at this juncture that as soon as I key in the last word, I will have that ‘I just delivered a baby’ feeling, and that after a few weeks of it sitting on the shelf, I will need to go change the diaper.  But that’s alright.  I’m getting better with practice, and now I need less wipes.

My Style, My World, My Voice!

My Style, My World, My Voice.

Good Day!

Flicking through reviews of those pertaining to my books and of other authors, it seems that readers have huge differences when it comes to exactly what they want and indeed like in a novel.

Some readers enjoy detailed passages about a certain place, especially if it is foreign to them or one they are familiar with, while others prefer to just flick through the prose until they come to either dialogue or some nifty action. And there are yet others who find much dialogue and banter frustrating when all they want is for the story to move along. But every one of these subtle differences are the essence of a book and it is these things which make one story so much different from the rest.

In the majority of books the dialogue is tight and goes straight to the storyline. But by adding your characters and building on them can only add to the plot and tale. As I progress, (and I’ve been told I am!) as a writer, I now try to add much more to develop my characters. Good characters help to pick up the pace of the book, adding diversity and even linking up the thread of another subplot.

Then we come to another conundrum; knowledge and the truth. And good grief, some people even complain that I know nothing about nursing…or about the places I write about…or…about sailing!... Now, let’s explain something very easy to understand. This is My World. If I say, this place has six churches and two cathedrals, then it has. Or that that hospital has a dreadful record of neonatal deaths then it has…because I write fiction. I want to paint beautiful, colourful pictures which my readers can easily look at and say, “Yes, I can identify with that without reading through miles of boring stuff. I can believe what she(Faith) is saying and it helps move the story along without pages of stats which obviously come from a source on Wikiepedia” – or something like that.

You can of course read non-fiction and the facts and figures will most likely be true but all too often they are accompanied by a feeling of complete ennui.

Judging by the emails and comments I receive many people like my books. They complement me if they’ve enjoyed reading the latest Diana Rivers mystery suspense novel. I’m asked about my characters, where I get my ideas and the original plot from and why I choose to write mystery suspense. I’m often asked if my stories are based on fact and I say, hand on heart, yes. I often take a handful of people I know well and mix up their characters before I come up with some dastardly wicked or some extremely sexy or odd people of whom I can write about. Many facts and places have happened or exist, but I frequently change the real identity in case I upset anyone. It’s a shame but you can’t please them all!

But let’s now talk about something else. There are a few things going to happen this summer. First, my new novels, “Seeds of Time” and “Harvest” are in their final stages of editing. (Bravo my wonderful editor. I think she deserves orchids this time round.) “Seeds of Time” is a completely rewritten, edited and enlarged version of the original, “The Crossing” which I first wrote in 2008. Because there is so much more I’ve added to the story I’ve made it into two books; the second being “Harvest”. “Seeds of Time” I hope to have published by the second week in June, followed by “Harvest” a short while later…I’ll keep you posted with a later update for my venture with this intensely romantic yet realistic novel. It spans two generations and covers the unimaginable gulf between the Second World War and the present and is crafted from the ruins of war and the indestructibility of love. The action is non-stop, the locations are intriguing and the characters are appealing …and I love it.

Secondly, I know a lot of you know about my involvement with the IndieChicksCafe. Well, we’re about to publish some more exciting books and thirdly, later in the summer something exciting will happen. I’ll let you know!

Lastly but not least...I'm more than halfway through the fourth Diana Rivers, mystery suspense novel. I've yet to finalize the title, Movie or Murder or Movie for Murder...or something like that!

I've had a fabulouso time so far this year. Record sales, I hit #40 on Amazon.co.uk and stayed there for three weeks and all three novels went to #1 Amazon.com. The Surgeon's Blade was recorded as having the 3rd most EVER downloads on the Sunday Mail weekend magazine. Sales went through the roof. So in case you missed it - a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far...I cannot ever do it without you, my wonderful readers. Thanks and have a super weekend
