Good morning Peeps!

I've another treat for your today...a boxed set of 5 books for only 99c! from the talented author Chrystalla Thoma. Here's a short synopsis on the books to whet your appetite.

Boreal and John Grey.

Elves and dragons. Tolkien’s legacy to the fantasy genre. But he took them from somewhere, too: the Norse epics. The aelfar – the elves were tall and pale – their name actually means ‘white’. These tricksters brought misfortune and illness, and exchanged healthy children with sickly changelings. They were the nightmare of the villagers in Iceland and Scandinavia, where the epic tales and songs (called Edda) were recorded in the 13c AD.

But what happened afterward? Where did the elves go? Didn’t they evolve like us, developing technology and building cities? Where was their world – the so-called Aelfheim (Elf Home), which was set to be one of the nine worlds hanging on the cosmic tree Ygdrasil? And would they come back?

That was the premise of Boreal and John Grey, my urban fantasy series. A veil separates the nine worlds from one another. Dangerous creatures called Shades often cross where the veil thins.

And it’s the job of Ella Benson, Paranormal Bureau agent, to keep them in check. Or has been, until now, because things are changing for the worse: increasingly dangerous creatures are slipping into her city, her work partner has just gone missing, and a mysterious – and hot — guy saves her life. His name is Finn and he’s apparently been fighting the Shades all his life.

When after centuries of peace the Gates between the worlds start opening and our old enemies, the elves, make a comeback, Ella needs a new, temporary partner. Enlisting the mysterious Finn is a no-brainer, until she realizes he is guarding dangerous secrets of his own.

Together with Finn, and the fate of the world on her shoulders, what’s Ella to do but grab her weapons and figure it all out, one way or another.

Read the complete First Season of the series Boreal and John Grey, books 1-5 (The Encounter, The Gate, The Dragon, The Dream and The Truth) at a special price with an Author’s Note at the end.

This is urban fantasy verging on paranormal romance. A sexy love story set against a backdrop of dragons, trolls and magical portals, fast-paced action scenes and suspense.

The Author, Chrystalla Thoma : Greek Cypriot with a penchant for dark myths, good food, and a tendency to settle down anywhere but at home, Chrystalla likes to write about fantastical creatures, crazy adventures, and family bonds. She lives in Cyprus with her husband and her vast herds of books. She writes mainly fantasy and science fiction. Her dystopian YA science fiction series “Elei’s Chronicles” (Rex Rising, Rex Cresting, Rex Equilibrium) is available on Kindle and in print. Shorter stories set in that world are also available, and a Companion to the series is also in the plans.
The first episode in the series is free so you can sample it – here: Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/Encounter-Boreal-John-Grey-ebook/dp/B00AVVDFGO

Excerpt: Finn’s attention had strayed to a counter covered in blades of all shapes and sizes. He reverently touched a katana. Then he lifted a throwing knife. He twirled it between his slender fingers and Ella wondered if he’d cut himself to shreds. But he didn’t.  Her new partner. She shook her head in disbelief. How had things changed so fast?

“Grab two of those,” Jeff told Finn who jerked back and almost dropped the knife. Jesus, talk about jumpy. “And throwing stars. Shuriken. Good for catching the Shades from a distance. Pure iron, special delivery, came in today.”

Finn hesitated, glanced from Jeff to Ella, then ran his hands over the knives and stars. His eyes fluttered closed, as if he were playing a musical instrument, fingers moving lightly over the shiny blades. Ella held her breath.

“Good weapons,” Jeff said, “all of them.”

That snapped Finn out of his trance. With a little sniff, as if to say he’d be the judge of that, he proceeded to pick up various knives and test their balance and grip, spinning and thrusting them through the air. So graceful. It reminded her of the first time she’d seen him fighting Shades, moving like a dancer through the night.  When Finn selected two knives and prepared to pass them through his belt, she turned to Jeff. “Sheaths?”

“Sheaths, yeah.” Jeff, who’d been staring at Finn, blinked and pulled out several from a drawer. He threw them at Finn who snatched them out of the air without missing a beat.  Jeff whistled, brows rising into his hairline.  Finn lifted his shirt and took off his belt to attach the sheaths, and Ella had to drag her gaze away from his perfect abs. She resisted the urge to fan herself. Whoa, baby. How hadn’t she noticed the night before?

Oh, right. Finn, passed out in her car and then her couch, covered in blood. His abs hadn’t really been the first thing on her mind.

“That looks like a nasty wound.” Jeff nodded at the stained bandage on Finn’s side, and she made a mental note to check that too, later. Soon she’d need an organizer for all those mental lists.  Finn buckled the belt and sheathed his knives. He looked up and grinned. His smile was startlingly beautiful and she found herself gaping — again. God, get a hold on yourself, girl.

“Like a porcupine,” she muttered, her own lips lifting in a matching smile. It was nice to see Finn happy — or at least pleased with his weapons. “What about guns?”

“Here, Finn.” Jeff lifted a Heckler and Koch USP CT pistol for inspection, a calculating gleam in his eye. What was he going for? “Semi-automatic, lightweight and accurate. Give it a try.”

A concentrated look on his face, Finn stepped forward to receive it. She opened her mouth to ask if he knew how to use it, but she needn’t have worried. He checked the magazine, and when Jeff threw him a shoulder holster, he pulled it on, tugging on the black leather straps as if he’d been doing it all his life.

Jesus. Who was he anyway?

The straps pulled on the neckline of his t-shirt, exposing a swath of muscled chest and his left shoulder. Before he adjusted it, a mark drew her eye, sort of like a starburst. A birth-mark?

“Have you used one of these before?” Jeff beamed at Finn, obviously considering him a kindred spirit.

“Similar one,” Finn grunted. He sheathed the pistol in one of the two holsters hanging over his ribs and folded his arms. Armed to the teeth, legs spread, head bowed, he looked ready to take on a whole army of Shades.

Jeff winked at Ella. “Well, well, Elly. Where did you find him? Ex military, is he?”

That was a thought. Might also explain why Finn was so mum about his identity and past. “Thanks, Jefferson. Now we can go to the lab. Finn?”

Finn lifted his head, his gaze unfocused. “At your command,” he whispered, shoulders tensing, back straightening, and the funny thing was he didn’t seem to be pulling her leg at all.

Eighteen years ago, Jaynee Monroe married the man of her dreams, became the mother of four, and fulfilled her career goals. About to turn forty, she senses something is missing from her idyllic life. While Googling her name in an attempt to find herself, she unearths something so impossible, she contemplates her own sanity. Seeking answers, she embarks on a journey to discover the truth, only to end up abducted by a deranged stranger who insists on calling her Caycee.

Why I Write Every Day.

Picture
Good Day Peeps!

I was recently asked how often I sat down each week to write a chapter or two on my latest manuscript. I didn’t need to think about this as I strive to write every day.  Afterwards it got me thinking. Why do I do this? Did writing every day bring any real benefits? I know many established writers do, if only for half an hour or so. Sometimes finding the time is difficult, but it’s important to me as I believe it bears good results.

Some people have busy lives with jobs, children and other commitments which don’t allow a set and regular period in the day just for penning a thousand or so words. Indeed, some people don’t accept that strict discipline is for them, they like a different timetable or procedure - fine. You have to do what is right for you.

Some authors write everything in one sitting, cramming many thousands of words in one day or over a weekend. For me, it’s the daily process which works and I set myself the very reachable target of 1000 words. Invariably I go over this and often write two or three thousand words, but 1000 is a nice easy target to aim for.

If you’d like to write every day, but are having trouble reaching that aim then maybe I can let you have some pointers which work for me.

Picture
* I believe you have to be focused, have a goal. Writing every day does just that. While writing my WIP, I think about it - it’s always at the back of my mind. It creates a sense of gentle pressure about what my story heroes are going to do next. I only write a basic outline, which is almost non-existent really. When I know I’m starting a new chapter/scene the next day, I’ll already have planned in my mind what is going to happen. It’s important for me to keep everything moving forward. If I didn’t then there’s danger of becoming stuck over one passage - not a good idea!

* Continuing on the moving forward theme, I consider a book’s pace highly important. In the early days of my writing career, if I left a work in progress for some time and then went back to it, I would need to read through everything I’d written thus far. As I went I’d find all the nasty little mistakes which appear when you’re writing fast and furious, and I’d end up editing the whole darn lot! This is all wasted time. You need to get back in that lovely groove!

* This leads onto knowing my characters. Because I write in a ‘loose hand’, with basic outlines only, my characters expand along with my story. So as the book progresses, so do my characters and we get to know each other by building on our acquaintance. Steadily that acquaintance becomes a real in depth friend and I learn every facet and what makes them come alive.

Picture
* Call yourself an author. Because I write every day, I am justified in telling everyone I’m a ‘writer’. At the very least this gives my confidence a boost if I’ve had a crappy day! And you know what, because I write or your write, then you ARE a writer. That is the only qualification you need after all.

This is what works for me. Of course you might not need to write every day – but if you’re stuck and find yourself 'slipped out of the groove', try it. Start with twenty minutes, and then increase it gradually, until you’re confidant and comfortable. Soon you’ll have the words flowing and another book will soon be written, maybe another bestseller!

Thanks for dropping by!

PictureAt last the long-awaited book four of the Ludlow Hall series family saga
Good Day Peeps!

It's a lovely spring day here in the UK and I'm delighted to let you know about a new release from the talented C C MacKenzie. Christine writes contemporary romance and if that's your genre then don't miss the opportunity to buy her latest offering, The Trouble with Coco Monroe.
A quick blurb about Coco...

...Coco Monroe narrowly escaped with her life after being attacked by a stalker. Six months later, Coco's decided to take control of her future from her over-protective father. She's convinced herself to devote her time and energy to a secret project, running the charitable trust for victims of domestic violence, First Step.

However, helping a woman and her baby flee from her powerful husband once again brings danger to Coco's door.
Rafael Cavendish, head of security for Monroe Industries, regards Coco as nothing more than a magnet for trouble. When he receives a tip-off that Coco's in danger, he's determined to take her to safety, whether she likes it or not.
But Rafael soon finds uncovering the truth about Coco is unsettling, exciting and dangerous to his heart.
A truth that will change their lives for ever.

'The Trouble With Coco Monroe' is a fun, page turning, sexy read that also asks questions about trust and relying on others.

About the Author:

C C MacKenzie is a wife, and mother of three, based in South Cheshire, U.K. Since childhood, she dreamt of writing stories that readers would fall in love with, but put those dreams on hold to focus on her family and her careers in finance, fitness, interior design and construction.

'Reckless Nights in Rome' is her first novel in The Ludlow Hall series, followed by book two 'A Stormy Spring' in July 2012, and book three 'Run Rosie Run'. 'Coco' is book four in the series.

'Big Trouble in China' released in September 2012 is the first paranormal novella of The Vampyre Legal Chronicles series. Book two, Dirty Little Secrets.

C C MacKenzie is currently finishing two more contemporary romances and more vampire paranormals due for release over the next few months. She is also working on a vampire paranormal saga set in a cataclysmic urban future since she loves those suckers!

Why choose that particular book?

Picture
Morning Peeps!

Although eBooks are ‘the’ thing to read these days I still love to rummage through bookstores. There’s something about the feel and smell of a brand-new book which excites me. In the UK there are some stores which sell off certain books at a ridiculously low price and I often venture for bargains when in town. Being an author myself, I was intrigued because some of the authors on these books I recognised as being well established writers.

While I was hunting down a book for that weekend a young assistant said to me. “Those books are going really cheap because they haven’t been selling. For some reason no one wants to read them.” I was surprised by her comment and immediately got into conversation with her. As we chatted one thing struck me. What makes a reader choose one book instead of another? What attracts them to that particular book?

It is the reader who decides what to read, but sometimes as readers, we are not given the full opportunity to make a decision about reading a book. Why? Because we may not be unaware that the book we long to read even exists.

So if that’s the case, how can we make each book written by each author reachable? It’s an impossible task to get it completely right, despite the huge lists on giants such as Amazon, or iTunes, nothing is perfect. At present the procedure involved in choosing a book is, (I think) a bit hit and miss. What attracts you after you believe you’ve tracked down which genre to read next?

If your favourite writes consistently well with a high standard, then chances are you’ll read everything that author produces. (Hurray for fans!) If that author is talented he or she can cross genre without any trouble. What next do you look for?

Picture
The Cover. The cover has to be eye catching, captivating and draw you in. You have to take a peek inside.

The Title. I start thinking about my title as soon as I’ve set my first words down. I keep a running list of what I come up with as possible titles, and then shorten it to one or two favourites. I believe a good title is also important to readers. As an author I want them to be captured enough to read my book.

The Blurb. A superbly written blurb can fascinate your reader and generate huge interest. Readers will ‘pick’ up the book and read about the plot to determine if the pages are worth their time. I believe a personal preference about genre comes into play here too. Good blurb can also make you choose a book depending on what your mood is at that time.

The Content. The beginning sets the stage, and a clever author describes the setting with just the exact amount of material to hook and contain their reader. As the book progresses, less and less descriptive parts are included – thus making the reader want to read even faster and reach the climax. It has to be exciting!

Reviews. So my reader is almost hooked. He/she might want to consolidate their interest by checking out any reviews the book has garnered. This is where excellent reviews really matter. The number is not so important as the quality of reviews.

I’m sure many of you will have other ideas about what makes you choose a book above all others. Why not share your findings with us here.

Thank you for dropping by and take care.
