Morning! Jan Ruth's books are all set in Snowdonia, Wales and her vivid settings play a huge part of each story. Ms Ruth throws the sometime harsh, sometime benign weather at us, adding some gorgeous scenery, and a rural life which often includes horses. Silver Rain is a story of bewildering family relationships: main protagonist Kate is in her fifties and recently widowed, her selfish and dipsomaniac sister Annemarie, and their confused aged mother. The other family which is equally dysfunctional consists of Kate’s sister-in-law, Fran, husband George and daughter. Plus George’s brother, Alastair (Al) the black sheep of the family, and in the middle of a messy and bitter divorce and - a relationship with a much younger woman, Jo. Disharmony in these families completely rule! Arguments, fights, sex, greed – they’re all there to read. If you enjoy a good domestic, laced with some mystery (which has kept George and Al at each others throats for years), then you’re in for a treat. My only problem was I could not relate with Al in any way. Jan portrays her characters well, but I found him to be too indecisive, too casual and not manly enough for my likes – a personal thing I’m sure, and it was Kate who fancied him after all! I just worried that he had enough staying power if and when Kate and he finally got it together. But all in all, Jan Ruth is a good writer; her books are filled with passion and are not overdone soppy romances, but often gritty and show life as it really is. 4.5 stars out of 5 for Silver Rain. Faith Mortimer (author of mysteries, suspense and romance) Good Morning! Last week, I was pleased to release my latest publication. I'd been playing around with words and came up with a romantic novelette. Sandstorm in My Heart is set on the coast of Egypt and if you imagine your own Lawrence of Arabia, then you're in for a treat. Pure romance with adventure and tension thrown in! Read the excellent reviews. Here is a short story description: She’s hot under the collar – and it’s not just due to the storm warning imminently expected to hit the Red Sea coast and Nubian Desert. Ann’s boss, tall handsome Jonathan has just dropped his bombshell. The archaeological dig, Ann and her colleagues are enthusiastically absorbed in, has run out of funding, and it’s all down to entrepreneur Conrad Knight. The local Bedouin Ababda, together with ecologists and conservationists, are up in arms…they don’t want Ann and her team digging near the designated national park. Ironically they want to preserve the forever changing desert landscape it as it is. As the storm clouds gather in intensity, dark, enigmatic Conrad arrives to explain his decision. But Ann refuses to listen and despite his warning about the pending sandstorm, flees into the desert in search of the elusive Ptolemaic temple which would solve all their problems. While Ann’s at the site, the storm catches up with her and she is forced to seek cover. Sanctuary arrives from an unexpected quarter and Ann is forced to question her heart. Should she trust it with this unfathomable rescuer dressed as Lawrence of Arabia? And it's going for a snip of a price...99c or the equivalent in your local currency eg 75p. Spring and early summer always puts me in the mood for romance...so here goes...a high drama saga spanning the second workd war right up to the present. A historical and contemporary story of love, loss and high drama...can you beat it? An Excerpt from my favourite novel, THE SEEDS OF TIME Enjoy! Prologue: "Billy gathered his ‘treasures’ together and laid them at the end of his ramshackle bunk in hut nineteen. There wasn’t a lot to account for three years’ incarceration at the hands of the sometimes-brutal Germans, but his treasures represented his life and more importantly his soul. He thought about the refugees who had filed past the gates of his camp. Old people: women with children, babes in arms, the injured, burned, terrified, and the deranged. All were fleeing from the horrors. The Christians among them struggling to believe and reconcile their religious beliefs with Nazi cold-blooded excesses and mass murder. Billy considered his pitiful little pile: Christmas cards from Penny, her heavily censored letters and her simple but evocative poetry, the hand-made playing cards, two cigarettes, the German soldier’s – Dieter’s – belt buckle and Nathaniel’s penny whistle. Nathaniel. Billy shook his head in regret and fought back the familiar choking feeling that arose in his throat whenever his memory arose. He thrust his dark thoughts aside and continued picking over his possessions. He would take as many clothes as he could carry. He had nothing heavy; he’d given his Bible away, hopefully to someone who would put it to better use than he. Gathering up his things, he tied them into a bundle with his faded and much darned pullover, and slung it over his shoulder. He straightened his back, lifted his head and stood as erect as his gammy leg allowed. I’ll march out of here proudly he thought. Together with his comrades they formed into ranks and marched smartly up to the gates. The weak and sick were supported by their stronger colleagues, their spirits rising. They didn’t know where they were going, but it had to be a better place than this. The Atlantic 2005 Richard knew he had no choice. It had to be now; he would never get another chance. He took a deep breath and pushed off the heaving wet deck of his yacht. With sheer determination, he dived for the rescue net. He hit the water, and his lower torso disappeared into the black froth that seemed to claw and clutch at him. Somehow, he managed to stretch out, and as he grabbed the harsh net with one arm, he felt the mesh tangle around him. The ship lurched, and this time he was fully immersed in deep water. What seemed like minutes later, he broke the surface, coughing and choking, the salt stinging his eyes. Clamping his other hand round the netting, Richard clung to it like a limpet. The water roared and hissed around his ears, terrifyingly black. He knew he must climb the rescue net quickly, as his energy was rapidly ebbing away, and conditions weren’t going to get any better. Moving one arm higher, he found a rung and hauled himself up, grunting with the exertion as he did so. His hands were bleeding from fresh cuts where he had smashed against the rough barnacles on the ship’s hull. Fatigue was rapidly overwhelming him. The past few days of untold stress and lack of sleep were taking their toll. Gritting his teeth, he managed to move up another foot of net and then by willpower alone, he pulled himself up rung by rung. He heard the faint encouraging cries of the crew far above him and paused. He looked up and saw a line of faces peering down at him. His adrenalin surged, and with renewed vigour, he at last collapsed thankfully on the ship’s deck. Utterly exhausted by his ordeal, Richard lay there not quite believing where he was. Water streamed off his body, and he knew that soon he would begin to feel the cold as it seeped through to his bones. Coughing and retching seawater, Richard sat up, suddenly noticing the ring of sturdy-looking sea boots before him. He attempted to stand and felt strong arms supporting him. He braced his legs against the motion of the deck and looked round. A circle of anxious faces stared back: a stocky bearded fellow whom he assumed to be the captain, four or five crew members, and an ashen-faced Toby. The captain cleared his throat, about to speak. Again, Richard looked around his surroundings and forestalled him by saying hoarsely, ‘Where’s Connie? Where’s my wife?’ His voice wavered, and he felt his heart thump wildly in his chest. There was silence. No one spoke. All sounds drifted away from him. He was in a dreamlike glide, and the reality was too strange to comprehend. He felt as though his actions were slowing, as if in a slow-motion film, frame by frame passing by. Everything took an eternity: a raised hand placed on his shoulder, a sentence spoken slowly by someone, but everything seen with an achingly clear focus, sharply defined. He imagined her limp in his arms, her head thrown back, and the curve of her throat, so beautiful. She was gone. The slow world turned crimson red. It spun wildly on its axis and then rushed up to engulf him as his head hit the hard deck with a thump. Chapter 2 Richard William Barker couldn’t get the idea out of his head that something was up. Nothing had been said, but he was now feeling edgy once he had finished talking to his friend, Toby Ellis. Richard thought over what Toby had told him. “Guess what? I knew you were waiting for that new piece of navigational software to come out, and I’ve pulled a few strings with some pals of mine at Oceantech. I’ve been given a sample which they’d like you to sea-trial for them. I was thinking – I have a bit of leave to take, and I thought I’d bring it out to Tenerife instead of trusting it to the post. The piece probably wouldn’t reach you in time before you leave to cross the Atlantic anyway. So I’ll see you both tomorrow. The flight gets in mid-afternoon, and I’ll get a taxi to the marina. I must say I’m looking forward to seeing you and Connie and catching some rays. The weather here is bloody awful at the moment.” Although Richard liked Toby, he knew his friend was often selfish and usually worked off his own agenda, so Richard had every right to feel suspicious. He paused on the foredeck of his yacht and shook his head. What the hell! There was probably nothing in it at all, and he was being paranoid. Toby was simply doing him a favour in delivering the piece of software and using Tenerife as an excuse to see some winter sun. Once Richard and Connie set sail, he would no doubt move into the swankiest hotel on the island and cast his roving eye around for some beautiful woman to pass the time. Richard laughed. Toby was the devil when it came to women, and no female under the age of fifty was safe as far as he was concerned. Richard didn’t know how he managed it. He decided he needed a cold beer before Connie got back from her shopping and rummaged around in the cool box until he found what he was looking for. He deserved a ten-minute break anyway. Richard reached the cockpit of his beautiful sloop-rigged yacht, Ellentari, and looked along her deck. He still felt a shiver of pleasure as he ran a hand over the smooth varnished mahogany trim. This trip was going to be the adventure of a lifetime, and it was something Richard had planned down to the tiniest detail. As far as he could tell, nothing was left unorganised or forgotten, and he was as coiled as a spring with anticipation. Richard’s long-term plans had come together nicely. They had all the necessary ingredients: the time, the money, and a successful partnership in which they complimented each other for the majority of the time they spent together. After a heady, passionate early marriage, Richard and Connie Barker had settled down with only the occasional stormy row to punctuate their steady relationship. Richard loved Connie – there was no doubt about his feelings towards her, but being fairly undemonstrative, Richard usually kept his inner feelings to himself…. In England, each year, the date for Mothering Sunday, (Mother's Day) is set by the Church, and is scheduled to fall on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This means that Mother's Day can be no earlier than 1st March, and no later than 4th April. The History of Mother's Day. In the UK, it is believed that the tradition of Mothering Sunday evolved from a 16th century religious practice of visiting your "mother church" (baptismal church) once a year. Most people would regularly attend their nearest parish, or "daughter church". It was considered vital that churchgoers made an annual visit to the main parish in their area, and this generally happened in the middle of Lent. In time, it became customary for young people who were working as servants in large houses, to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday. They could use this day to visit their own mother and often took a gift of picked flowers, food or hand-me-down clothing from their employers to her. In turn, this moved towards the modern holiday, on which people still visit and take gifts to their mothers. So, from its religious roots, Mothering Sunday has now become a day of celebration, where mums are given flowers and other gifts from their offspring as an expression of thanks. During the Lent fast, people did not eat sweet, rich foods or meat. However, the fast was lifted slightly on Mothering Sunday and many people prepared a Simnel cake to eat with their family on this day. A Simnel cake is a light fruit cake covered with a layer of marzipan and with a layer of marzipan baked into the middle of the cake. Traditionally, Simnel cakes are decorated with 11 or 12 balls of marzipan, representing the 11 disciples and, sometimes, Jesus Christ. One legend says that the cake was named after Lambert Simnel who worked in the kitchens of Henry VII of England sometime around the year 1500. As writers, we thought we’d give our mothers something different this year…and a group of us have put our heads together and come up with some books (and other ideas) which we feel will appeal to our mums! And thank you reader for dropping by, Faithxx Morning Peeps! Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day – the modern name) is almost upon us. Looking back over the years I remember lots of useful tips my mother gave me when it came to looking good and staying young – she’s still beautiful at age 79! I asked around my friends and together we’ve come up with some great tips. One thing stood out – take ample care of your skin. So for those of us who treasure our own looks, here are a few hints and pointers I’m sharing with you. Looking beautiful! When applying mascara, put on one coat and while it is still wet use your middle finger tip to put a little powder on the lashes. Then after a few seconds apply a second coat of mascara. You’ll discover you have luscious thickened lashes. Lots of mothers, use good old Pond’s Cold Cream for cleansing and then two to three times a week massage Bio Oil into their faces. One lady in her 70’s said she hasn’t washed her face since she was in her early teens. She was taught by her grandmother to use just a cleansing cream. Make-up was removed by her own homemade astringent of rose water and witch hazel… it closes the pores and you’re left with hardly a wrinkle! Never put anything near or on the fragile skin beneath your eyes and take care when removing eye make-up – do it gently. Great advice from lots of older ladies is to keep your face out of the sun. One friend said she watched her mother moisturising her face and neck every day and then when she became a teenager she began the same daily routine of moisturising with Vaseline Intensive Rescue Moisture Locking Lotion, moving on to Olay Essentials Beauty Fluid Sensitive Day Fluid (£5.99) as she grew older. Another said her mum always swore by Baby Zinc and Castor Oil Cream for everything, and she still uses it now. It’s also good for red noses when you have a cold. If you put it on before bed and it will relieve the soreness overnight. One mum advised her daughter not to wash my face with soap, but to use a cleanser and rinse with cold water. Quite a few friends agreed their mother used the simplest products — Pond’s Cold Cream and Vaseline — and they didn’t let their daughters have too many sweets or chocolates. Perhaps most important of all they made them eat all their greens every day! Make sure you have a beautiful haircut and if you need it, put in highlights. It may be expensive but by buying yourself a little self-assurance, it is always money well spent. Olive oil and avocado oil seems to come out trumps too. By rubbing the oils all over your hair, plus dry skin patches like elbows and knees, adds gloss and condition – and it’s not expensive. Apply lip balm on your teeth to stop the lipstick from going on your teeth! (I haven’t tried that one yet!) Always take your makeup off at night because you’ve got that face for life. You have to wash your face! Always eat healthy! Beautiful skin comes from within and you can work out and have lots of facials but if you eat badly neither of those will matter. Wear sunscreen on the backs of your hands. It stops them aging with dryness and sunspots. To have youthful skin, drink lots of water – but never from plastic bottles. One mother advised using rice water to rinse your face — she said it would brighten skin and boost clarity. Finally, when getting pregnant one mother advised her daughter to wear a girdle after the birth for about a month or so. Everything – apparently will go back in place! She said it did work! Look and stay beautiful ladies – we owe it to our mothers. Thanks for dropping by. Faithxx Faith writes romance, mystery, suspense and thriller novels as well as being a dutiful daughter! Morning Peeps! As I said in a previous post, Springtime is one of my favourite times. We're at home in the UK right now and having a jolly good old sort out. It's amazing what one accumulates in the house and - don't mention the loft! A few more trips to the municipal dump and we won't know ourselves for space! As an author, I've noticed that some writers regularly change their book covers and Spring is an excellent time to have a splurge. I've recently had a new cover made for The Diana Rivers Mysteries Volume 1 (Books 1-3) - I hope you like it as I think it's smashing! Within the next few weeks there will also be a new edition to the Diana Rivers stable - The Diana Rivers Mysteries Volume 2 (Books 4-6). So look out for it! My latest novel, A Deadly Learning (#6 Diana Rivers Mystery Suspense), has received some fabulous reviews, albeit only a few weeks old. I thought I'd include a very short excerpt here. Enjoy! A DEADLY LEARNING. ...Diana’s attention was caught by one almighty crash from inside the building as the outer wall came down, and then a silence, which seemed to go on for ages. Dust hung in the air. In fact, everything appeared to hang in time and space until there came a muffled cry, followed by a startled shout. The onlookers stood frozen for a second, and then they all moved towards the building, intrigued to see what had happened. The first to reach the building stopped, and their jaws dropped. Then another shout rang out, followed by a woman’s scream. Diana glanced at those standing nearest. A few took an involuntary step back. Clarissa Partridge clamped a hand to her mouth before turning aside. Sarah Headleigh looked round in panic, and the younger woman teacher, Bernadette, turned as white as a sheet. Something caught Diana’s eye, and she moved to see what it was. She peered through the settling dust and watched a figure slip round the corner. She was positive it was one of the male teachers: tall, distinguished-looking, with thinning sandy-coloured hair. He was on his own when Wendy had waved to him earlier. The students had been shocked into silence and shifted as one cohort nearer to the building. Diana noticed how Louise’s boyfriend, Jake, had a tentative smirk on his face, and he was searching the crowd as if looking for someone. The gang foreman stepped back from an inner wall; a cavity had appeared, showing where the original material had been. Something long and thin was caught suspended in the muck and dust above his head. Everyone peered into the gloom. Diana’s head whipped round as she heard a collective gasp. She stared. Surely that was a …femur? There was no mistaking the underwear. Once lacy and white, the knickers and bra clearly indicated a woman. Part of her rib-cage had disappeared, but perhaps most hideous of all was the skull—irreverently placed upside down, but still grinning at the spectators—its mop of dirty-blonde hair caught on a piece of jagged wood. Diana gaped as much as everyone else. Apart from the gruesomeness of the scene, she wondered why the woman’s underwear had been tampered with. With her legs in the air, her lacy knickers were around her ankles, and her bra had been pushed around her neck.... Morning Peeps! I love March, don’t you? Spring is here or just around the corner, swallows return from foreign lands to nest, young animals are born, flowers bloom and everyone throws off the mantle of grey winter and welcomes the return of warmer weather. Spring is a time for getting things done; whether at work or at home, and as I work from the comfort of my living-room, I enjoy the best of life. To celebrate Spring I'm having a FREE DRAW (details see below). This March I’m particularly delighted because I’ve just published the 6th Diana Rivers Mystery suspense novel, A DEADLY LEARNING. A Deadly Learning is set on the Algarve of Portugal, a long-time favourite haunt of the British for their holidays. The opening scene goes like this: The grounds around the science laboratory of the International School and College of Portugal looked as pristine on that day as might have been expected from this pillar of education. The acres of freshly cut lawns and a blaze of summer flowers were a delight. Only the plastic crime-scene tape surrounding the complex betrayed a sense of profound unease. Renovation work had begun on the laboratory only the day before, and teachers and students had been warned away from the building. It was during the removal of one flimsy wall that the workmen made a gruesome find. There was a small cellar underneath part of the laboratory. The floor and walls were crudely finished; the place was used as a store for obsolete items. That fateful day, they were knocking through one wall when they came across a cavity … in which they discovered the dry remains of a body… I’m excited about this book, as it’s another example of how Diana Rivers gets caught up in something which she really shouldn’t … intrigue, mayhem, sex, and drugs and… of course murder all play their part in this novel. If you’re looking for a spring read or a gift for someone, then A Deadly Learning is available as an eBook (paperback to follow ASAP), on all Amazon sites, Nook, Kobo, Google play and Apple. Go on spoil yourself! You’re only a spring chicken once…! Free Draw! And please remember, we authors really appreciate your reviews. Twenty words are all it needs to leave a review on Amazon, Goodreads and other eBook sites. And as a thank you, all readers who write a review & publish it on Amazon.com, Nook, KOBO or Apple will be entered into a draw for $$ vouchers.
