It is almost time when 'the' magic day for adults and children alike is upon us. What have I got to say? Well, I've thought about making up something smart/well-meaning/from the heart/funny/smulchy but there's many clever Christmas messages already out there. It's not a competition. Some of my favourites are;
Christmas is for children. But it is for grownups too. Even if it is a headache, a chore, and nightmare, it is a period of necessary defrosting of chill and hide-bound hearts. Lenora Mattingly Weber,
The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting. Louisa May Alcott
But I am sure that I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round... as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely. Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
The past year has been on the whole good for me. I've made some wonderful friends, visited some amazing places, experienced events both rich and heart-stopping momentous. In truth I've been fortunate enough doing what I like doing most and the year has been rewarding.
But looking back, some of the year's world happenings have been dreadful, sad and shattering - and although I've not been directly affected many of my friends have. I really hope 2013 will prove to be a better year for the many thousands, nay, millions who have suffered.
Christmas should be a time of rejoicing; we should honour this precious interval in our hearts. And thinking about it, not only during this festive, holiday period but wouldn't it be better if we honoured it throughout the year? If we give others friendship, love and respect all year long then we can hope those good things will come back to us. An enriched life is a joy to behold.
Finally, I have to thank all my friends, followers, fans and readers of my books for making 2012 the most amazing of years. Thank you, thank you, thank you - I could never do this without you. Here's to 2013 and YOU!
